…but they’ve never capsized an island.

Courtesy of Rep. Hank Johnson (D-Ga.) during a discussion with Adm. Robert Willard, head of the U.S. Pacific fleet, stating his concern about a planned increase in troop levels in Guam (possibly part of Obama’s plan to fight insurgents):

“My fear is that the whole island will become so overly populated that it will tip over and capsize.”

See for yourself:

Not only that, but what the heck was the purpose behind his questions on the length and width of Guam?! Was he going to calculate tipping point?

These are our “leaders”, folks.

UPDATE: After video of the exchange went viral on the Web, the two-term Democrat released a statement Thursday explaining that he was “obviously” joking.

“The subtle humor of this obviously metaphorical reference to a ship capsizing illustrated my concern about the impact of the planned military buildup on this small tropical island,” Johnson said in the statement.

Call me cynical, but I don’t buy it. The video doesn’t lie–there’s not a hint of joking, no smile, nothing. The statement was just a lame attempt at CYA.
