Windows 7 Launch Party…

…and why I’m not doing one. Windows 7 is released to the masses Friday, and to increase exposure, awareness, blah blah blah, Microsoft is having some folks do Windows 7 Launch Parties for the event. And here’s why I would never do one, despite the fact that Win7 is a great product, and despite being…

The Problem with Psystar

I’ve been considering getting Mac, simply because not only do I want to use OSX, but because on their platform I can also then run Windows and Linux on the machine. But the glaring gap in the Apple lineup is that there is no non-iMac system between the Mac Mini and the Mac Pro performance…

Font Smoothing in Mint (or other Ubuntu-based distros)

The default fonts on my Mint were driving me crazy at this resolution (1280×1024), and options for the kind of font smoothing that XP and Vista have weren’t readily apparent. But thanks to the knowledgebase that is the Internet (yeah, I’m sure it’s also in some man pages in Mint as well) here’s how to…

Vista SP1 RC review

I was initially worried when I began the install: it warned that the process may take an hour or more (didn’t jot down the exact wording). But, after 9 minutes, the Service Pack completed…or so I thought. Required a reboot, at which time it began the real install, notifying that it was Installing Service Pack:…

Vista SP1 RC available

The overly-long-awaited SP1 for Vista is almost out now, but Microsoft released the Release Candidate today to the general public. Have to jump through a couple hoops, do a couple updates, and do a couple reboots before it is seen on Windows Update, but it is indeed there. (Oh, and it’ll have to be removed…

Explanation of the OS issue…

So why the fuss about the operating systems on my (main) computer? Despite being a Microsoft Certified Professional (yeah, ooh and ahh) and Small Business Specialist (further oohs), I’m not a strict fanboy of Windows. Nor am I a strict fanboy of Linux. Simply put, the current status of computers today is such that each…

So after all that work…

…I haven’t been in Vista all day. Just working between Mint and XP thus far. (If that made no sense to you, see posts from earlier in the day…)

Success!

System is now tri-booting between XP, Vista, and Linux Mint. I’d initially messed up Vista’s BCD (bootloader) by installing GRUB to the MBR, so then had to repair the BCD, boot into Vista, download EasyBCD, and go to work on editing the BCD to my liking. And then, of course, testing. Now all is well…and…

Computer, Redux

So I wasn’t patient enough for Vista SP1 to be released, so yesterday afternoon I redid my computer, and am now partially completed. Dual-booting with XP Pro and Vista, and will be adding Linux Mint into the equation once I get each of those completely settled with driver updates and Windows Updates. Like you care,…

Windows Vista….grrrr

I’ve been running Vista since its early Beta releases, initially running in dual-boot with XP. Somewhere along the way the XP partition got corrupted, so have been fully Vista since. My review of Vista: it’s ok. That’d about sum it up…there are some cool new features, some ok ones, but it’s a whole lot of…
