See?! We’re Not Completely Unreasonable…
- by Scott
The past dozen years or so, before the birth of our oldest, we’ve been pretty stridently firm on not vaccinating our kids.
And yes, I know many of you may disagree, and that’s your right… and this is ours.
We have a whole host of reasons why we have chosen not to; WA State defines those under the categories of philosophical, religious, and medical reasons. And we do cover all three.
Our pediatrician also supports our decision, and we’ve had very specific discussions on vaccinations and the risk vs benefit of each…and we’ve also recently been surprised by other doctors during our recent hospital visits with Maddie that are cautious about many of the vaccines for very specific medical reasons as well. Plus we’re sticklers about the whole legally-mandated “informed consent” that few doctors/clinics actually do (equal blame goes to the vast majority of parents who don’t bother to ask or exercise this right)…but that’s another post altogether.
But as the kids get older, there are a couple we are looking at. And now, after the boys’ checkup this afternoon, one of them is off the list and they are no longer completely non-vaccinated…

I sometimes wonder if I never vaccinated my kids if they would be "normal". I have an Aspergers/ADHD child and a son with sensory disorder. Although Aspergers tends to be genetic, the ADHD component is really what is hard to deal with. She can't hold on to anything for very long. It's really sad. She's 12 and her capabilities are almost being caught up by her 9 year old sister.
