Day 4…

Wondering where posts from Days 1-3 are? Well…they don’t exist.
I started this fast last Friday, not as a totally planned thing, nor some diet thing, nor as some super-spiritual thing for Lent. Was just an inkling that began earlier on Friday.
So I did. Not sure why yet, and maybe this is where the spiritual nature comes into play…but I am just doing, trusting that the will be made known.
Just juice, water, and tea, and not even in massive quantities.
It’s been surprisingly easy thus far, despite the fam having some of my favorite foods. I’ve been satisfied.
It has reminded me about a book by Richard Foster called Celebration of Discipline that was one of my favorites 15 years ago or so. Here are some quotes from it on fasting:
“More than any other Discipline, fasting reveals the things that control us”
“We cover up whatever is inside us with food and other good things, but in fasting these things surface”
“Fasting reminds us that we are sustained ‘by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God’ (Matt. 4.4). Food does not sustain us, God sustains us”
“Therefore, in experiences of fasting we are not so much abstaining from food as we are feasting on the word of God. Fasting is feasting!”
“Fasting helps us keep our balance in life. How easily we begin to allow nonessentials to take precedence in our lives. How quickly we crave things we do not need until we are enslaved by them”
Have you fasted in the past (or currently)? Why? And what did you learn?
